I worked on the lighting and compositing of Doctor Manhattan alongside an army of other very talented artists here at Imageworks who helped to bring Doc to life. It’s amazing how many people put effort into that one frame, modelers, riggers, texture painters, animators, lookdev artists, fx artists, pst’s, dpm’s, lighters / compositors, supervisors, more supervisors, producers, directors, etc etc etc…. the list goes on and on…

The term sub surface scattering was coined to describe the effect of how light enters the skin, scatters inside the sub surface layers and exits back out in multiple places. The effect itself is simply a blurring of the incident ray, or scattering of that ray as it bounces around the inner layers of the skin. The effect is basically a blur based on depth, the further in the ray travels the more it will scatter and diffuse. Sub surface scattering is closely related to diffuse light because there is no specular component, so why is sub surface scattering not simply called depth diffuse??? Anyone?

What makes a good color key when trying to shoot a visual effect?

I always wondered what advantages and disadvantages blue screen had vs green screen techniques, after having to pull several on Watchmen I think they both have strengths and disadvantages.

Ideally I would prefer everything to be blue screen. Blue is the shortest wavelength in the spectrum and will generally have less spill cleanup then green, unless you have chrome surfaces then it does not really matter. Green is probably the worst color to use because it is likely to bleed and spill all over the subjects you are trying to key. Human eyes are most sensitive to light around 555 nm, which is in the green region of the spectrum.

However, from a camera perspective, green is the least noisy channel. Blue channels on cameras are always noisy, especially on digital cameras. Digital cameras have the most resolution in the green channel. You can check out this webpage for more in depth info:
http://www.earthboundlight.com/phototips/raw-files.html

What I would like to know is which cameras are better for shooting blue screen, digital or regular film cameras. I wish we had shot at least one shot with both and compared the blue channels. I’m guessing that film cameras would have less noise?

When trying to pull blue screens I always have to deal with dancing edges, this is due to the camera noise. Although you can apply all kinds of filters to get the edge quality better it’s never perfect and you always end up having to roto and do several passes to get the pull. On green screens it’s not as much of an issue but then you have a lot of spill cleanup so I am still not sure which is better…..
